Water Water – but not everywhere At home we don’t need to think much about utilities like water – it’s all there quite literally ‘on tap’. The simplest answer of course is to use a container to collect water from a nearby tap as caravanners do. In practice this means having another container as well to take the waste water but these are not very convenient in a motorcaravan where you are frequently on the move – even if just for days out. In practice then almost all modern motorhomes of any size will have both fresh tanks as permanent fixtures and many will have waste tanks too. The tanks are kept dark either in a cupboard or by being made from black polythene to help prevent algae growth. The filler is usually outside with a locking cap – and a clear symbol for water, to discourage anyone from filling up the water tank with fuel – but this is not unknown – nb!!
Caravan Hook-up Points
Pin It I see it all the time. People go to view a caravan normally privately full of excitement and high expectations and this tends to blind them from some of the things they should be checking for. Checking these things could potentially save you money and even prevent an accident or injury at a later date. How can you avoid making the same mistake? This point check list is all you need to thoroughly inspect a caravan from top to toe:
This secluded woodland hide away contains 24 hard standing super pitches for motor homes & caravans, each having its own independent water supply, electric hook up point and mains drainage set.
Tony and Denyse Allsop delve into this regular source of debate. They certainly appeal to retirees new to caravanning and the manufacturers are quick to adapt to what the consumer wants. But the power needed to run all the electricals and electronic equipment in big vans is most easily supplied by a V powerpoint in a caravan park.
Inverters are available, but power is lost converting 12V to V, so they are best used for short term needs such as electric razors. Even with a large deep-cycle battery and a solar panel, staying offroad for even a couple of nights becomes problematic without running a generator for hours. One solution may be to install a second battery and more solar panels — we once saw a van with three large batteries in the front boot.
Unfortunately, all the batteries were flat because the solar panels could not keep up the charge to all three, even in sunny weather.

Alde wet heating on gas 5 Caravan mover See text From the table you can see that modern flat panel TV’s are quite economical and that tthe newer LED backlit ones are even more efficient. Do make sure that the one you buy can be run directly off 12 volts. The table also shows that fluorescent lights use less power than halogen lights and that LED lights are more efficient again. Some are even available as direct replacements for the spotlights found in more recent caravans.
Clearly, swapping to this type of lighting is going to make a significant impact on battery life, especially during long dark evenings. We often get asked about the power consumption of caravan movers with people frightened that using a mover would quickly flatten their battery. Whilst it is true that movers do use a lot of power they are normally used for no more than a minute or two on each outing.
The effect of this on a good battery is negligible and nothing to worry about. Using power efficiently is the first step to managing without a mains hook up. The simplest and most cost effective way of getting additional power is to buy a second battery. This can be swapped with the main battery when it runs down or alternatively for telly addicts be used just to power the TV.
Should you wish to do so it is possible to connect two batteries together. However there should be a suitable fuse local to each battery and ideally the batteries should be identical.

Low or No Water Pressure Sooner or later there will come a time when you discover, sometimes at an inopportune moment, that the water pressure in your RV is either very low or there is no flow at all. If you are not in the habit of changing your in-line water filter every year, be aware, that, over time, these filters will slowly fill up with gunk—slowly and often unnoticed lessen the pressure and flow through the filter. First, turn off the water at the RV site hose bib and then disconnect your water hose from the spigot.
Turn the water back on and see if there is plenty of pressure and flow. If this is the case, then the problem is on your side. Also check the obivious. Make sure that there is not some restriction in the hose like a kink between the hose bib and your RV. Usually, you will find that the water pressure is just fine.
